The aim of this project was to design a leaf blower that would be effective for those struggling with arthritic hands and wrists by addressing pain points. A brand was to be selected and the brand language followed in the design process. NOTE: Project is fictional.

LEAF

BLOWER

After exploring the form and features that were present in products already on the market, I began with my first round of

IDEATION

Through prototyping and ergonomic analysis, several key challenges emerged for users with arthritis and age-related mobility limitations when operating handheld outdoor tools like leaf blowers. These challenges include:

  • Excessive wrist strain

  • Discomfort from prolonged hand clenching

  • Difficulty pressing small or rigid buttons

Mood boards

for finding the direction and clarity of brand language for Litheli, which was selected for its minimal aesthetic and simple handling.

Second Ideation and Revision

This concept featured a tilted handle for easier weight distribution and a battery that would release from the body after pressure was applied. However, examining the inner workings of the leaf blower revealed that the placement of the battery would need to be changed.

The battery placement was reconsidered, and details were addressed.

Final Renders

The issues were addressed in the following ways:

  • Handle position allowing for better weight distribution to reduce wrist strain

  • Button placement not requiring excessive force or strict hand placement

  • Pop-out battery

  • A large button that can be pressed with the palm to remove the attachment
